Ways to reduce the cost of your medical care:
First and foremost, polite questioning of your doctor should always be considered in order. Before I could afford cars with warranties, I politely questioned mechanics. One time, I avoided thousands of dollars in repairs which were deferred until I traded the car. So, just do it!
In this month’s Money magazine there is an article entitled, “4 Ways to Cut Your Medical Bills” which I believe is germane.
Now the meat of the article:
- Cancel Unnecessary Tests: “Ask whether a test will change your course of treatment.” If the answer is no, cancel.
- Search for Options: “Inquire where you can get the test done.” Costs vary several times for the same thing, especially MRIs, CTs, and PET scans.
- Comparison Shop Ahead of Time: Talk with the billing department where the test will be done. “At a minimum, they should provide a cash price. Call your insurer for large ticket items to see where there are less expensive options.
- Vet the Professionals: “ You don’t want surprise bills from other doctors who might participate in your care.” Ask your main caregiver whether whoever will participate in your care is in your plan’s network. You don’t want to be sniped!
In this current health environment, it is better to be forewarned.
